400 Students, Coaches and Cheering Supporters Pack NYU-Poly for Brooklyn FIRST® LEGO League Robotics Qualifier

Nearly 400 Brooklyn youngsters and their teachers gathered at the 12th annual Brooklyn qualifying round of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL®) on Saturday, January 14, to present months of serious research on food safety and the little robots they built and programmed to demonstrate food safety issues3 in a gymnasium filled with cheering parents, coaches and fans.
With Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) as host to the event and FIRST's only New York City-affiliate partner, as well as a supporter of many of the schools’ year-round robotics programs, the annual FLL Brooklyn qualifier has grown to become the largest in New York City. Once again this year, the Brooklyn qualifying event was filled to capacity, with some Brooklyn teams competing in Queens.
Of the 42 teams of 9- to 14-year-olds who competed at NYU-Poly on Saturday, 22 advanced to the Citywide FLL Robotics final, which will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan on March 18, 2012.
Long weeks of practice and research readied the FLL teams to devise technological or robotic applications to real-world problems related to a topic selected yearly. In 2012, the budding engineers and innovators were asked to solve issues related to the theme "Food Factor®: Keeping Food Safe." Coached by their teachers, as well as by NYU-Poly graduate fellows who conducted in-school lessons to complement the robotics program at 18 of the schools, the students produced such novel proposals as apps to monitor the soil conditions of gardens and plastic packaging that measures the amount of oxygen to which sliced chicken sold at groceries may be exposed. (The higher the oxygen, the higher the possible incidence of bacterial contamination.)
FLL is one of four robotics programs offered by FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit that inspires students to get involved in science and technology via exciting, hands-on robotics competitions. This is the 12th year that NYU-Poly and FIRST have hosted FLL, which introduces elementary and middle school students to the thrill of hands-on robotics, research, teamwork and inquiry-based problem solving, in order to spark a lifelong passion for science and technology.

NYU-Poly supports in-school robotics initiatives in 22 Brooklyn elementary, middle and high schools as part of two affiliated initiatives, called Applying Mechatronics to Promote Science (AMPS) and Central Brooklyn STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Initiative (CBSI). Together, they send NYU-Poly graduate students into local schools to challenge students to design, build and operate robotic devices, teach science and engineering, and provide training to advance teachers’ understanding of STEM subjects. The results are powerful: 65 percent of participating students increased their STEM grades by a half or full-letter grade.
AMPS/CBSI is a public-private partnership supported by The Black Male Donor Collaborative, the Brooklyn Community Foundation, J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation, XEROX Foundation, NY Space Grant Consortium and White Cedar Fund, and the supporting graduate fellows program receives major funding from National Science Foundation’s GK-12 Fellows Program.
NYU-Poly works with New York FIRST® on all four FIRST® programs, which engage kids from the age of six through high school. In 2012, FIRST programs will involve more than 293,000 participants.
In addition to the FLL, FIRST offers Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) for 6- to 9-year-olds, and FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) and FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®), both for high school students. FRC, known as a “Varsity Sport for the Mind™,” challenges teens to design, build, program and test a robot to meet a specific challenge. FLL Clinic at Poly/NYU Dec. 3, 2011

Hello,

We are now mid-season and I thought we would check in with our rookie team(s)/coach(es).

We are having a clinic December 3^rd for rookie teams and coaches to help trouble shoot any problems you may be having with designing or programming your robot.

You will learn how to better use different LEGO parts and take advantage of NXT G programming blocks.

The clinic is designed for the coach and student to learn and build together.

Attendance should consist of 1 coach/2 students.

*You cannot attend without your student(s)* (I suggest you bring your top builder and programmer this way they can take what they learned back to the team.)

There are 3 key elements that will be discussed:

--> Basic Navigation

--> Navigation with attachments

--> How to make sensors work for you

Please bring your laptop w/charger, complete nxt kit w/current built robot, one built attachment, and extra LEGO pieces to build another attachment from scratch.

We will start with a 30 minute lecture/introduction; then you will be broken into groups to start working on your robot.

Robotic technicians will be on hand to assist with any questions; an FLL playing field will be available to practice running your missions.

There are four session blocks which last 2.5hrs each. Please pick which session you would prefer to attend.

You will be assigned in the order that your registration is received and availability of time slots.

The date of the 2012 JrFLL Expo is set for Saturday February 11th, 2012 with a snow make up date of Sunday February 12th.

The location is: NYU Polytechnic University.

The number of participating teams is capped at 24 on a first come, first served basis.

Some teams will be invited to participate at Jacob Javits for the NYCNJ FIRST Robotics Expo, but it will be handled by lottery after the JrFLL Expo.

Cost of participation will be $40.00 per team.

Dear Teams,

Note: this is going out only to teams that have registered so far and not to my general mailing list, though I will post this on the blog. Make sure to update the coach/contact information for your team if that information changes so they are in the loop. Forward this email to anyone else who needs it.

Primary: Next Saturday Sept. 24 at NYU/Poly in downtown Brooklyn (same location as Brooklyn Tournament) from 10-3 is our annual kickoff where the Food Factor challenge will be explained and you can ask questions and see demos. I will post more details on the blog as they come in. The event will start in Pfizer Auditorium at 10 with follow-ups in the Jacobs Building. http://www.poly.edu/directions

So far we have 144 teams registered with a few weeks left. So we should be having another robust year. Registration closes at the end of September or if they run out of field set up kits. If you still want to register more teams note that you do not have to order extra field set up kits as long as you have one.

LEGO Robotics Book out now and featuring the NYC group

I want to share with you that the LEGO Robotics book I’ve been working on for the past 18 months finally was published and released at the recent ISTEConference (late June in Philly)…

– a section of the book presents interviews with “colleague experts” and (needless to say) the list of these reads like a roll call of New York City LEGO Robotics/FLL enthusiasts. Included are: Laura Allen, Mark Sharfshteyn, Mike Koumoulos, Chris Dudin, Ian Chow Miller, Evan Weinberg, Corbett Beder, Phil Firsenbaum (there are others I reached out to as far away as Hawaii, but these are the NYC folks you’d know)… some of them found their way to me and into the book via the announcement you put in the blog when I started the project. Again, if you can mention the release of the book I’d appreciate it. The book, by the way, is intended to provide background and first steps for teachers. It should help many, as it gives the: "LEGO Robotics? What is it? Why do it? Could I do it? Where do I begin? What do I need to know? To buy?" background info and advice... and on and on etc. etc. etc.

FIRST Robotics Teams from New York City Public Schools to Showcase Robot Creations in the Sony Plaza Atrium on July 13-14

NEW YORK, July 12, 2011 – Various high school students from the New York City area will showcase their award-winning robotic creations in the Sony Plaza Atrium at Madison Avenue and 56^th Street on July 13-14, 2011. The robots were created for the national FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition that took place from March 11-13 in the Jacob Javits Center in New York City, and will be on display for the public from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET each day.

Specifically, students from Morris High School Campus, Herbert H. Lehman High School, and High School for Computers and Technology in the Bronx will present their robots to the public and encourage visitors to interact with them in hands-on learning environment. Students will also share with visitors the mechanical and design challenges they faced in building the robots.

“At the Sony Wonder Technology Lab, we take great pride in allowing visitors to explore technology in a fun and engaging way, which is why we are thrilled to be hosting local students involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition again this year,” said Karen Kelso, Executive Director of the Sony Wonder Technology Lab. “Both organizations are committed to helping people discover just how rewarding technology can be, and we are delighted to be providing the general public with an opportunity to experience these students’ uniquely designed robots first-hand.”

NY Yankees & Curtis Granderson Honors Morris FIRST Robotics Team

Friday night the Morris FIRST Robotics Team ( 2TrainRobotics) was honored on the field at Yankee stadium prior to the game with the Cleveland Indians which the NY Yankees won 11-7. During the pre-game ceremony Curtis Granderson congratulated each member of the team. He then went on to hit a home run that night, another one on Saturday and then had 4 hits on Sunday. Granderson now leads the Yankees in home runs with 20. Could it be a coincidence or the magic of the 2Train?

Revolutionary new teaching tool!

“A Revolutionary Way to Learn to Program Robots!” That’s what a teacher said at our ROBOTC forum. “Wow, this is really cool.”; that’s what kids in classrooms say.

Carnegie Mellon is developing an innovative tool that enables kids to program robots in a game-like environment. You can download a free version of the Robot Virtual World programming software that your students can use at home or at school. The great thing about this software is that you can test your robots in the virtual world and then use the exact same code to program real robots. Teachers are free to use this free resource in summer camps, at home, or in other settings this summer.

This project is part of the development of our "Computer Science Social Network ". Computer programming and algorithmic thinking are new basics that all students need to understand. Our project provides students with opportunities to learn how to build animations and games, program robots, learn fundamental STEM concepts, and learn how multi-robot communications happens. The project started in September 2010 and we’ve already developed new technology that will change the way students learn.This project is inspired by DARPA. DARPA is looking out 10 years and predicts that based on the number of students currently studying computer science, we will only be able to fill 30% of the computer science related jobs that our country will need to compete economically. DARPA requests that we track student, teacher, and hobbyist usage and that is the reason that we ask you to login to get the free new Robot Virtual World Software.

New features, new robots, and a new planet

New game features include gripper arms on robots, access to light and touch sensors, four new challenges, the ability to accrue points and move to different levels, and an additional planet called H98. Pictured below is a new robot to program while you are on the planet.

Helping Boy Scouts earn their new Robotics Merit Badges

Congratulations to the Boy Scouts of America on the creation of their new Robotics Merit Badge. The new merit badge will be a smash hit with boys across the world; the new merit badge appeared to be very popular at the recent Boy Scout Leader’s Conference in San Diego, California. At the conference, the Robotics Academy presented their plans to support the Boy Scouts as they earn the merit badge.

Summer Robotics Teacher Training

Since 2003, Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Academy has offered robotics training to teachers across the country. This summer we will offer training on how to program Arduino, LEGO, and VEX robot controllers. Classes start the last week of June and run through August. We limit the number of attendees to 24 teachers per week.Teachers learn from Robotics Academy instructors and also from each other.

LEGO “Robots in Motion” Curriculum Testing this Summer

Another ongoing research project in the Computer Science Social Network is the integration of a Cognitive Tutor into our newly developed “Robots in Motion” Curriculum.

The curriculum foregrounds measurement, angles, speed, scale, and rate as students learn to measure and make precise moves and turns using robots that come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

The AI-based tutor uses special algorithms to provide hints and measure a student’s mastery of STEM concepts as he or she works through a series of engineering design problems.

PLTW Summer Training

PLTW Teachers for the Principles of Engineering, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Aerospace Engineering, and Gateway to Technology courses will receive training inROBOTC's new Natural Language to prepare them for their transition to the VEX Robotics system. To kick-off the training, a group from the Robotics Academy offered several workshops for the PLTW Master Teachers and Trainers, who will be training the rest of the PLTW network.

The Robotics Academy has committed to the continued support of the PTLW network through free webinars, curricular resources, forums and technical support. PLTW Teachers are also encouraged to attend one of the Robotics Academy's Online or On-site Training Classes.

Multi-Robot Communications in ROBOTC

It's not hard to imagine a world where robots are talking to each other. One part of the development of our Computer Science Social Network consists of a team conducting research around developing a combination of hardware, software, and curriculum that enables students to learn about Multi-Robot Communications. We have integrated libraries into ROBOTC for the LEGO NXT, VEX Cortex and Arduino Uno/Mega platforms.

The team’s plan for this summer is to demo and test the lessons and labs they have worked on with a group of teachers this summer. The technology that we are developing uses a low cost wireless Xbee radio to create a mesh network between different types of robot controllers.

The robots are able to pass small messages back and forth to create group intelligence and the ability to solve challenges that a single robot could not. To simplify this, the development team has begun building easy-to-use tools and commands into ROBOTC to make this technology accessible to all levels of programmers.

2011 Food Factor Challenge: Keeping Food Safe
Releases September 2, 2011

Can FIRST® LEGO® League teams improve the quality of food by finding ways to prevent food contamination? In the 2011 Food Factor Challenge, over 200,000 9-16* year olds from over 55 countries will explore the topic of food safety and examine the possible points of contamination our food encounters – from exposure to insects and creatures, to unsterile processing and transportation, to unsanitary preparation and storage – then find ways to prevent or combat these contaminates. In the Food Factor Challenge, teams will build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® NXT to solve a set of Food Safety missions as well as research, develop, and share their innovative food safety solutions. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under FLL’s signature set of Core Values.

I will start by simply saying Thank You for all of the work that you have done this past year to make FLL a success in NYC. However, there is nothing simple about the work itself. The countless hours, above and beyond your day jobs, which you put in to make the Body Forward season a success cannot really be summed up into words of gratitude that would do them justice. All that I can say is that they are very much appreciated, by everyone around, but especially the kids (which is really what it’s all about and why we do what we do). I look at it from this perspective: Even if what we do helps steer the life of one child in the right direction, then it’s worth it. But I know that the work we do has an impact not just on one child, but hundreds of them…and that’s definitely something to feel good about.

In respect to this past weekend’s Javits extravaganza – IT WAS GREAT. Everyone who has come up to me as well as to some other volunteers has said that the event was the best one they have attended yet, that everything from a spectators point of view worked as it should have, and that the teams had a lot of FUN! We had some very good press, especially on Sunday (which I attribute, ofcourse, to the FLL/Jr.FLL events which were present, but then again I’m biased ;)

I hope that all of you took some notes about what worked, didn’t work, what worked but needs improvement, and everything in between for our debriefing.

Hello all,

I wanted to take this chance to thank Liz, Greg and Mike for giving me the opportunity to take part as a FLL technical judge in this weekend's event--it was such a huge success!

I am happy that I was part of such a great and inspiring event. As a third-year Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering student, I have learned many complex concepts and theory when it comes to mechanical components and design. What I saw on Sunday, as presented by the students, really showed me that one doesn't need to go to college to learn those concepts. All one needs is the determination, passion and willingness to learn. I will never forget this lesson.

I went today (can't go tomorrow unfortunately but I really did want to see those operations!) and it was mind-blowing! it was like a super sporting event with mascots and 'uniforms' and war paint, except that competing teams were NICE to each other! the diversity was uplifting, and the enthusiasm was contagious and inspiring. I felt like I was seeing the future in these kids and I actually wept. thanks Norm.

I thought you would like to see this nice video of an FLL success story - Team 7916 at PS 64. Our FLL Team 2357 last year began mentoring a team at P.S. 64, a public school which had had significant cuts to its science curriculum. In our off season, we introduced the PS 64 afterschool program (supported by Educational Alliance) to the FLL program, and recommended that they make use of the New York Academy of Sciences STEM afterschool mentoring program.

This fall, led by Anju Rupchandani, PS 64 did enter FLL for the first time as Team 7916, with mentor Daniel Gilmer (PhD candidate at Rockfeller University and NYAS volunteer). We are very proud of how far they have come in a short time! Not only has Anju Rupchandani at PS 64 been able to add an afterschool robotics class, but in addition, she has been able to add Genetics & Earth Science.

NYAS made a video about their STEM mentoring program, which also features the Body Forward challenge. I thought you would like to see it, as example of an FLL success story - we hope to continue mentoring Team 7916 in the future.

The NYC NJ FIRST Planning Committee is pleased to announce a unique and exciting opportunity for JrFLL Coaches and Programs who have registered multiple teams. Due to increasing demand, our registration is currently capped for the upcoming Exposition at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Sunday March 13th, 2011.

We are currently able to offer an opportunity for teams and programs with multiple registrations to showcase their research projects and models at the upcoming Brooklyn Borough Qualifying Tournament at NYU Polytechnic University on Saturday January 8th. We have space for 4-6 teams to set up a table and share their accomplishments with the 50 FLL teams who are participating in the tournament. There is no cost to participate and the event will not be judged. We participate in this project because we think that it’s a nice experience and it’s very interesting for prepare our future. Nearly all of us is going to do technological studies.
One month ago, our group of friends were talking and we noticed that there was a competition.

The 2011 Expo for JrFLL, in March of 2011 at Jacob Javitz Convention Center, may be months away, but spots for the upcoming EXPO are filling up spot.
We have a limited number of openings available for teams planning on participating.

Last season we welcomed 17 teams from all over the Tri-State area to Javits and enjoyed a tremendous success.

This season we have 20 spots available for the EXPO. Seats are filling up fast!

The JrFLL EXPO is a non-competitive showcase of student work, including a show me poster or research project and a model designed to represent team exploration of the current theme, "Body Forward", All students receive recognition for their participation.

The cut off date for registration for the NYCNJ FIRST JrFLL Expo is December 15th, 2010, or until all 20 spots are filled!

Any coaches or mentors who are interested in reserving a spot need to register a team with US FIRST via the JrFLL program link first.

1. Registration closes Friday night at midnight. If you know of a school wanting to register tell them to do so ASAP.

2. Qualifying fees
Now that we are heading into preparing for qualifying events, we wan to remind veteran teams and inform new teams that there is a fee involved for each team in order to help make thees events as meaningful as possible for your students. Depending on the tournament these fees go towards covering costs of trophies, renting chairs and tables, tee-shirts for the judges and volunteers. (And food for them too.) Last year the fee was $30 and we are trying to keep it the same but are looking at the budgets.

There will be no fee for the Javits tournament in March.

3. A rule has changed since the kickoff
Scott Evans has deleted Ruling 3 and replaced it with the new, sparkly Ruling 10 on Robot Game Rulings. It goes a little something like this:

The LEGO manufactured “color” sensor, which is the only light-activated sensor in the retail Mindstorms NXT robot set, is now given the green light as an allowable sensor in the FLL robot game. Consider it added to the list in Rule 6. Testing has shown that this sensor is about equal in capability to the standard “light” sensor for robot game purposes, so you are allowed to use it as a color sensor or as a light sensor – it doesn’t matter. Only the LEGO manufactured sensors are allowed. Other brands such as HiTechnic brand are still not allowed.

4. If you haven't paid you have until Oct. 15. The longer you wait the longer it will take to get your Field Set up. That is a very important issue, particularly for rookie teams. You have to start getting the kids to build them in order to move forward. If you paid but haven't gotten your materials - contact Deanna Bishop at Pitsco. Email me if you have problems.

5. We have started working on a training session. Nothing set in stone yet but Oct. 16 is a target. You would have to being your robotic kit (not the Field Set up). No room for kids - coaches only. Email me if you have a special situation where you want to bring one child and I will see if it is possible. Check my blog for updates - upper right hand side panel.

Hello all,

The link below will take you to the registration site for the Queens
Qualifying Tournament. It is the only way to register for the Queens
tournament. This year there appear to be many more teams in Queens.
There might possibly be more teams in Queens than slots at our
tournament. This won't be clear until teams officially drop out.

If more teams register than there is room for, we will handle it in
this manner. Organizations that register a single team will be given
priority. That means that they will all get it. Organizations with
multiple teams will be asked to make a choice. Choice #1: Run a
tournament for your teams and participate with only a portion of your
teams. Choice #2: Compete some of your teams in Queens and some
elsewhere (with Norm Scott's approval). Choice #3: Compete all of
your teams elsewhere (with Norm Scott's approval).

1. Robot Sets: A quick note from Jr.FLL and FLL Product Development Manager Amy Mitchell-Hartson: The FLL robot set is currently on back order for U.S. orders. The recent shipment was held up by customs, and is not expected to be released until September 13th. I recognize that this is bad timing, but unfortunately there is nothing that we can do to have customs release them at a faster rate (unless one of you know someone uber special). If teams contact you regarding their robot set order, please let them know that we will process all orders ASAP.

Please encourage teams to start the project and build the Field Setup for now to keep the season moving. Speaking of the Field Setup…

2. Rookies and FSKs: Approximately 23% of registered teams for the 2010 FLL Body Forward season are rookie teams. One thing that the rookie teams may not be aware of is that they need to have access to a Field Setup Kit (FSK). In your email blasts to teams, if you could please remind teams that they need access to a FSK and that the ordering period ends in a few weeks, we would be very much appreciative.

It’s
about the learning process & having fun!
Don’t
stress about learning the programming – There are good tutorials:

Emphasize the importance of the
commitment by team members & their parents; making the practices &
being available for the Qualifier Tournament & the Finals. Send a letter
home about practice/tournament dates & times, for the team member &
their parents to sign. Also, send reminders home of upcoming events. Solicit
the help of parents & colleagues at practices and/or tournaments (and be
sure to express your appreciation for their support).
Let the kids become the experts! Remember this is a kid project; you are
there for support & guidance –
encourage & ask thought provoking questions to help them come up with their
own solutions to the challenges.

you are building the tabletop (not absolutely necessary but nice if you
can),
the Table Construction
specifications are below.
Research Project
Print out the Research Project topic from the
Internet.
Have
all members of the team do some initial research on the topic and share
what information
they found & resources.
Team
discussion/brainstorming of ideas of what the team would like to do
for their project.
Consult
the experts on the topic – Internet, agencies, etc.
Identify
which team members are going to be responsible for the project &
Presentation.
However, any member of the team should be able to
have
input.
Give
your research presentation pizzazz!
Robot Challenge
If possible, have more than one NXT
robotics kit – one-per/3-4 kids.
Design different models.
Be aware of the Parts Rules, see below.
Introduce the use of sensors,
simple programming for the sensors, & motors.
Have the team discuss & design
robots specifically for the challenge.
An easy & free download LEGO
Digital Designer is available @ http://ldd.lego.com/default.aspx
for designing robots & attachments.
Then have the team
decide on the best robot to accomplish the
missions & make
a duplicate.
Discussion of the missions on the
field:
What
needs to be accomplished?
What
attachments or sensors are needed?
What
missions can be combined together?
Have the students
work in pairs or threes, with each group being
responsible for a
mission or group of missions.
Identify specialties, who are the
main robot designers, builders,
programmers, &
handlers (the members who will go to the tables at
the tournament)
are, although all should be able to have input in any
area.
The
handlers work in pairs: one controls the robot and the other is the
“spotter” who helps put on
attachments & removes objects in base out of the way. The team can have 1-4
pairs of handlers for the different rounds. Usually, there are 4 rounds. The
highest score of all the rounds is used to determine place.
Technical/Robot Design
Identify
the two members who will present the robot to the judges for
the
Robot Design Award. They will have to demonstrate the robot,
explain
the attachments & use of sensors, as well as, programming.
(Printouts
of programming would be useful)
Teamwork Award
The
team will have to explain to the judges how they worked together to
tackle
the challenge.
Ideas:
Develop a website and/or blog for the team. (Research Project
members could be
responsible for it).
Team Spirit Award
Team
T-shirts, caps, costumes, etc. Signs. Bookmarks & flyers about your
Research Project.
Cheering
squad - Have students, teachers, parents come to the tournaments.
Champion’s Award
Robot
Design 25%, Robot Performance 25%, Project Presentation 25%,
Teamwork 25%

Each
member attending each tournament must bring a FIRST Consent Form.

Practice, Practice, Practice
3 Weeks before the Qualifier -
Pretend to be at the tournament – go through
what will be done: Robot
Performance 2 ½ minutes. Robot Design 5-10 minutes; Research Project 10
minutes; Judges’ interview of the team for Teamwork Award.
V-Day – Qualifier & Finals
Bring
consent forms, a kit for repairs & enhancements, robot(s) (if you have
more than one kit, build &
program two identical robots in case something happens to one & you don’t
have time for major repairs), robot charger, Research Project materials, laptop
& charger, power strip, extension cord.
Lunch,
snacks, and/or money for food.

TABLE CONSTRUCTION
The Robot Game takes place on a specially designed
table, so you’ll need to build one to practice on if you don’t already have
access to one. With safety, weight, height, and cost in mind, a simple
design is offered here, but as long as your surface is smooth, and your border
walls are located properly, how you build the understructure is up to
you. The construction is simple, but does require some wood-working
skills.
At a tournament, two tables are placed back to
back, but you only operate on one table, so you only need to build one table to
practice on. Since a tournament setup has a double wall at the interactive
area where the two tables meet, practice tables need an extra wall of type B on the corresponding side. So
here are the instructions for building one “half-table” including a double
north wall:

Assembly
Step 1 -
Determine which face of the plywood (A)
is least smooth, and consider that the bottom face. On the bottom face,
locate, clamp, and screw on the stiffeners (D) (about every 18 inches). Be sure screw head tops are
flush. Sand any splinters.
Step 2 - On the
top face of the plywood, locate, clamp, and screw on the border walls (B,C)
around the top perimeter. The wall-to-wall dimensions must measure
93±1/8” by 45±1/8” (2362±3mm by 1143±3mm).
Step 3 - With
the help of another person, place this table top on short saw horses (or milk
crates, or anything else short and solid).

This rule is not only about the robot. It
also covers all of the attachments and strategic objects you bring to the
competition area…
Everything you compete with must be made of LEGO elements in original factory condition, except LEGO string and tubing, which you may cut to length. Exception: You can reference a paper list to keep track of programs.

There are no restrictions on the quantities or sources of non-electric LEGO elements, except that factory-made wind-up/pull-back “motors” are not allowed. Pneumatics are allowed.

The electric elements used must be the LEGO MINDSTORMS type, and the total number of electric elements you may use in one match is limited as follows:

Example 1: If your robot has three motors, you may not have any other motor in the competition area, even if it’s only for weight or decoration; even if it’s in a box, off the field.

Example 2: If your robot has two motors, but you have multiple attachments to motorize, you must design a way to switch the 3^rd motor from one attachment to the next.

LEGO wires and converter cables are allowed as needed.

Spare/alternate electrical parts are allowed in the pit area.

Computers are not allowed in the competition area.

Objects functioning as remote controls are not allowed anywhere.

Marker may be used for owner identification in hidden areas only.

Paint, tape, glue, oil, etc. are not allowed.

Stickers are not allowed except LEGO stickers applied per LEGO instructions.

You are not allowed to use more than one robot in a single match, but it’s okay to use a different robot in a different match.

If a robot is in violation - of this rule or the SOFTWARE rule - and cannot be corrected, the decision about exactly what to do rests with the head officials at the tournament, but that robot may not win awards.
