There will be a mini marathon so there are street closings: West Side Hwy (usually southbound) will be closed from 42nd St to Chambers. Please allot for enough travel time and make the bus companies and parents aware in the event they need to re-route.

Remember when you go up for judging that you are judged in all categories at once, so please bring your research and your robot for technical design to the judging area when you are queued up.

The Participant identified above (“Participant”) desires to participate (as a team member, coach, mentor, judge, or in some other manner) in the FIRST® Robotics Competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST LEGO® League, Junior FIRST LEGO League, or another FIRST program (the “Programs”). As a condition of allowing Participant to participate in a Program, United States Foundation for Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (“FIRST”) requires that the Participant (by his or her Parent/Guardian if under 18 years of age) agree to the terms of this Consent and Release Agreement.

1. Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) understands that participation in the Program will expose Participant to risks of injury including, without limitation, injury from: building, lifting, and using electrical/mechanical robots and robot components; using tools; other participants; dancing and other associated activities. Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) understands that FIRST does not select, employ, supervise or otherwise exercise authority or control over the coaches, mentors, and other participants in the Program. Participant, if 18 years of age or older, acknowledges and agrees that he/she is primarily responsible for his/her safety. The Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age acknowledges and agrees that the Parent/Guardian is primarily responsible for the Participant’s safety and that the Parent/Guardian will monitor, as appropriate considering the age of the Participant and other factors, the Participant’s participation in the Program.
   
2. In consideration for FIRST allowing the Participant to participate in a Program, Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age for and on behalf of the Participant and the Parent/Guardian) assumes all risk of such participation and hereby releases FIRST and (except as expressly provided below) all of FIRST’s directors, officers, employees, volunteers, and agents from any and all claims for any injury of any kind to the Participant (and the Parent/Guardian) or other damages that may occur as a result of the Participant’s participation in the Program, including without limitation any injuries or other damages that may be caused by the negligence of FIRST or negligence of any of FIRST’s directors, officers, employees, volunteers, or agents (including without limitation negligently failing to adequately investigate or screen coaches, mentors, volunteers, etc.), and agrees not to file any lawsuit or otherwise make any claim against FIRST or any of FIRST’s directors, officers, employees, volunteers, or agents for any such injury or other damages. The Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) does not hereby release any claims against any individual person who intentionally causes injury to the Participant.
   
3. Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) understands that photographs, videotapes, and other recordings will be made of participants in the Programs, including the Participant. Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) consents to those photographs, videotapes, and other recordings and the use thereof (i) as part of a record of the Program and (ii) to promote FIRST and the Programs.
   

Participant (and the Parent/Guardian of a Participant under 18 years of age) has read this document and understands that this Consent and Release Agreement includes a waiver of the right to make injury claims that is intended to be legally binding. FLL Javits Update for March 18, 2012

Dear NYC Teams,

We are only a little over a week away from the championship round on Sunday, March 18.

This is the first of a few emails I will be sending out. All emails and as much info as possible will also be posted on the robotics blog: http://normsrobotics.blogspot.com/

TEAM INFO FORM ATTACHED
I am attaching the Team Info form which you should print and fill out. You must stop by the registration table at the entrance to the pit area and hand this form to me or the other people collecting them to officially considered as being present.

I will be assigning you pit table numbers which I will post on the blog and also email to you after I get the actual layout. I will keep groups of teams together based on requests from sponsoring organizations. I will automatically keep multiple teams together (you don't have to email me).
We are giving out the pit tables in advance to avoid long lines when you arrive at the registration table. BUT YOU OR ONE OF YOUR REPS MUST HAND IN THE FORM AS YOU ENTER THE PIT AREA.

Competition times depends on your pit table number. The lower the number, the earlier you go.
Thus, I am taking requests based on your preferred time of arrival.
There are 2 basic categories: EARLY or  LATE
If you expect to arrive early -- at 8 -- I can give you a low number.
If you expect to come a little later --- 8:30 or later I can give you a high number.
If you don't care one way or the other I will assign you numbers in the middle.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL IF YOU ARE OK WITH BEING IN THE MIDDLE.
ONLY RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL WITH EARLY OR LATE -- YOU MUST INCLUDE YOUR TEAM NUMBER AND SCHOOL OR I WILL START PULLING THE REST OF MY HAIR OUT.

In case you are unaware, there is actually a 3-day robotics event taking place at Javits; FRC (all 3 days) FTC (Saturday all day) FLL (Sunday all day) and JFLL Expo (Sunday). The layout and schedule for the weekend is attached. Feel free to attend any of these events.

3. FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
The bad news: You are not allowed officially to bring food into the pit area.
The good news: no one searches your closed containers. But if the security guys see food they will not let you take it in. Once you are at your pit table no one checks.

This year’s New York City FIRST LEGO League Championship is being held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on Sunday, March 18 as part of New York City’s FIRST Mega-Celebration.

Eighty Two teams selected from the teams that competed at five borough FLL qualifying tournaments will be in-line for New York City’s top honors.

The 2012 New York City FIRST LEGO League Championship is free and open to the public. Bring family and friends and be part of the New York City’s celebration of kids working smart in science and technology!

400 Students, Coaches and Cheering Supporters Pack NYU-Poly for Brooklyn FIRST® LEGO League Robotics Qualifier

Nearly 400 Brooklyn youngsters and their teachers gathered at the 12th annual Brooklyn qualifying round of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League (FLL®) on Saturday, January 14, to present months of serious research on food safety and the little robots they built and programmed to demonstrate food safety issues3 in a gymnasium filled with cheering parents, coaches and fans.
With Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly) as host to the event and FIRST's only New York City-affiliate partner, as well as a supporter of many of the schools’ year-round robotics programs, the annual FLL Brooklyn qualifier has grown to become the largest in New York City. Once again this year, the Brooklyn qualifying event was filled to capacity, with some Brooklyn teams competing in Queens.
Of the 42 teams of 9- to 14-year-olds who competed at NYU-Poly on Saturday, 22 advanced to the Citywide FLL Robotics final, which will be held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan on March 18, 2012.
Long weeks of practice and research readied the FLL teams to devise technological or robotic applications to real-world problems related to a topic selected yearly. In 2012, the budding engineers and innovators were asked to solve issues related to the theme "Food Factor®: Keeping Food Safe." Coached by their teachers, as well as by NYU-Poly graduate fellows who conducted in-school lessons to complement the robotics program at 18 of the schools, the students produced such novel proposals as apps to monitor the soil conditions of gardens and plastic packaging that measures the amount of oxygen to which sliced chicken sold at groceries may be exposed. (The higher the oxygen, the higher the possible incidence of bacterial contamination.)
FLL is one of four robotics programs offered by FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a not-for-profit that inspires students to get involved in science and technology via exciting, hands-on robotics competitions. This is the 12th year that NYU-Poly and FIRST have hosted FLL, which introduces elementary and middle school students to the thrill of hands-on robotics, research, teamwork and inquiry-based problem solving, in order to spark a lifelong passion for science and technology.

NYU-Poly supports in-school robotics initiatives in 22 Brooklyn elementary, middle and high schools as part of two affiliated initiatives, called Applying Mechatronics to Promote Science (AMPS) and Central Brooklyn STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Initiative (CBSI). Together, they send NYU-Poly graduate students into local schools to challenge students to design, build and operate robotic devices, teach science and engineering, and provide training to advance teachers’ understanding of STEM subjects. The results are powerful: 65 percent of participating students increased their STEM grades by a half or full-letter grade.
AMPS/CBSI is a public-private partnership supported by The Black Male Donor Collaborative, the Brooklyn Community Foundation, J.P. Morgan Chase Foundation, XEROX Foundation, NY Space Grant Consortium and White Cedar Fund, and the supporting graduate fellows program receives major funding from National Science Foundation’s GK-12 Fellows Program.
NYU-Poly works with New York FIRST® on all four FIRST® programs, which engage kids from the age of six through high school. In 2012, FIRST programs will involve more than 293,000 participants.
In addition to the FLL, FIRST offers Junior FIRST® LEGO® League (Jr.FLL®) for 6- to 9-year-olds, and FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC®) and FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®), both for high school students. FRC, known as a “Varsity Sport for the Mind™,” challenges teens to design, build, program and test a robot to meet a specific challenge. The FIRST contests at NYU-Poly are sponsored by Time Warner Cable and Con Edison.

FLL FOOD FACTOR SEASON is in FULL EFFECT.  We are holding Borough Tournaments all over the Tri-state area and we NEED YOUR HELP.   I know that some of you have already sent me your availability for this month, but can you kindly send to me again.
