NYCFIRST FLL UPDATE - Prepping for March 14 Tournament at Javits

Dear Teams,
We are 10 days away and I'm getting some nervous emails from coaches about what they need to know. Please ask me anything and I will answer in the next email.

TEAM INFO SHEET -  ATTACHED
This must be handed in to me or an assistant at the entrance to the pit area which I will be ferociously guarding and will use offensive line blocking techniques to assure each team turns it in -- and those who forget to bring it - don't ask me for a pen to fill out another one. When you hand in your sheet you will get a folder of materials for the day with schedule, etc.
SCHEDULE -
We open the pit area at 8AM. We should be done by 4-4:30.

I have a tentative schedule in spreadsheet form of judging and performance times. I am not sending it out at this time, pending modifications. We will have copies in your folder.

Opening ceremonies are planned for 9:20am, followed by judging sessions.  Performance rounds will begin approximately at noon, with 3 rounds to be completed by each team.

Between arrival and 9:20 there will be a coaches meeting - probably near the playing field.
Also you must see Veryl Green to get your robots inspected. She will either be near the playing field or at her team pit table 9.
You should bring your mats and FSK if you want to practice.
There should be outlets to plug in laptops.
Watching your stuff
Over all my 13 years of being involved I can recall only 2 or 3 instances of something that went missing - a laptop, a tablet. But this is a free entry area with no security so you need to consider how to protect your property just in case.
Phones, tablets, laptops can be tempting targets.
There are hundreds or people milling around.
And a reminder -- few if any chairs - so bring them or bring something to put on the floor for kids to sit on.
You have room in the aisles but table space can be tight.
And share with neighbors.

CHANGES IN SOME PIT ASSIGNMENTS -
Since the last update, I received requests from people to be grouped with sister or brother teams and I tried my best. Last minute requests, with the deadline I had, put too much pressure on my aging brain. See the attached update pit table list. Check for team and school/organization names for errors and get back to me by tonight. Note pits in particular numbers 20, 53, 80 for modifications. I didn't include team names this time but will post on the Norms Robotics blog.
JAVITS GENERAL LAYOUT attached.

Our pits are to the upper right, judging on the lower right and competition area is at the bottom where you see Bleachers. Print out some copies for yourself and parents and colleagues who may be coming.
I sent out the detailed pit map in a recent update -- print that out.
Note the JFLL - ages 6-9 - exhibition area in the middle -- stop by to visit.
FRC
It is important to make this a full learning experience for the kids and having some context will help.
There is a concurrent 3 day tournament going on for the high schools and they get a good deal of space. They are the top half of the map -- their pit area is at the very top and you should try to find some time to take your team on a tour --- you will need safety glasses to get in -- they loan them out at the entrance.
Also watch a few rounds of the competition.
This is the FRC competition - with 6 robots on the field at a time.
Here is a link if you want to school your kids so they know what is happening -- http://www.nycfirst.org/programs/frc

Last year an FTC exhibition was set up in the front of the pit area -- I'm not sure if this is happening again. That competition took place separately. This is also for high schools. You can read about it here: http://www.nycfirst.org/programs/ftc

I'm  embedding the team, pit assignments and school names in this email.

NYCFIRST NEEDS YOU TO VOLUNTEER AS A JUDGE AT UPCOMING EVENTS

A message from Norm Suteria, NYCFIRST Director of Communications:

I was struck by the post-game interview with rookie New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler last night.

Though completely overwhelmed with emotion and the impact of his accomplishment, he said this:

"I just had a vision that I was going to make a great play and it came true....it all comes down to preparation."

Butler's Super Bowl-winning interception at the goal line was a direct result of his hard work and dedication to continuous improvement, both on and off the field.

He practiced day in and day out and studied game film to decipher and anticipate the offensive moves of the Seahawks.  (This video clip, from a November 2014 visit to Vicksburg High School, also captures his philosophy.)

Now I think I know what you're thinking:
What does this have to do with a robotics competition?

Simply this:

We need your time and talents to help NYC FIRST teams have their defining moment as the emerging scientists, engineers and technology leaders of tomorrow.

As a competition judge, you help participants learn that hard work, preparation and perseverance are valued and rewarded.

No experience is needed, we welcome all volunteers both non-technical and technical, and training is provided. Breakfast and lunch are, of course, served.

Upcoming volunteer opportunities for competition judges:

Looking for Mom/Daugher FIRST LEGO League Participants

We need your help! FIRST is looking for a mom/daughter team who participate on a FIRST Lego League team, with the mom as a volunteer or coach and the daughter as participant.

Do you know of anyone?

Why are we asking? FIRST is lining up a day of one-on-one interviews with editors at national women and teen/tween magazines slated for Tuesday February 10th in NYC.

The mom/daughter pair would be interviewed in conjunction with Don Bossi, the President of FIRST.

Please email Norm Sutaria, NYC FIRST Director of Programs, at norm@nycfirst.org or call him at (646)580-9749 if you're interested.
