World Maker Faire at the NY Hall of Science

Jeanne Boyarsky and I are attempting to pull together a coalition of FIRST FRC Teams for the World Maker Faire at the NY Hall of Science at the end of September. Please read the email below and forward it far and wide. I would definitely be interested in getting the FLL and FTC teams on board, but wanted to start small with the FRC teams.

Warm regards,

Norm Sutaria

Dear FRC Teams,

As volunteers at the 2010 NYC Regional, it was a pleasure meeting and helping each and every one of your teams as your robots, drivers, spotters and human players made their way onto the competition field.

We're writing to let you know that the World Maker Faire (http://makerfaire.com/newyork/2010/callformakers/) is taking place on September 25th and 26th, 2010 at the New York Hall of Science in Queens, NY and guess what? The event organizers are looking for participants.

This event could serve as a wonderful community outreach project/recruitment tool for FIRST teams from across the tri-state area.

We would like to see if your team is interested in participating and, if so, we would enjoy coordinating a coalition of teams to introduce the general public to FIRST and FRC. (Imagine having a Breakaway field and teams scrimmaging against one another in addition to information stations and activities for spectators.)

The "Call For Makers" is already underway and, with the end of the school year rapidly approaching, time is of the essence.

Fill out this Google Form to let us know if your team is interested and to provide us with contact information. We're looking to set up a wiki and/or a meeting to generate some ideas once we determine which teams would be interested in taking part.

Please feel free to forward this email to any teams you think might be interested and contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Warm regards,

Norm Sutaria

Museum of Natural History Robotics for Kids April 11, 18, & 25th, 2010 from 11:00am - 1:00pm

"">

The Adventures of Robo-Jones…

The AMNH (American Museum of Natural History) in NYC is having a parent & child (3rd-5th graders) workshop to learn about the cultures of the ancient Mayan, Aztec, & Olmec cultures; and then each Parent-child team collaborates in designing, building, & programming NXT robots to simulate exploring an ancient temple on an archaeological dig to collect artifacts.

The instructor, Veryl Greene – former FLL coach, has been teaching “Robots in Space” at the museum, where kids learn about the Rovers that explored the Moon & Mars, then they design, build, & program their own robots with Mindstorms NXT kits.

The workshop is scheduled for April 11, 18, & 25th, 2010 from 11:00am - 1:00pm. Space is limited. To learn more about the workshop & sign-up contact Siva Ramakrishnan:

St.Clare's of Staten Island Holds Public Forum on Smart Moves Research

Hi Norm,
St. Clare's School held a public forum at its Great Kills (Staten Island) school in late January to present its Smart Move research to the community. Below is a link to an article on the FLL team's segment that appeared in the Staten Island Advance. The event drew over 200 guests and featured a special guest speaker, Mary Mattingly from the Waterpod Project.
Our four FLL teams focused on transportation options for our school, ranging from a bike program for older students, to cars with hybrid or air compression engines, and solar-powered buses with improved seat belts. The story deals exclusively with the bike proposal but each team focused on a specific idea.
We also had our new Jr. FLL teams there (eight teams) showing all kinds of projects like solar powered kiddie cars, tree houses that could accommodate special needs children, new safety features for ferries, special emergency devices to help people exit from buildings on fire, and more.
Our older FTC students were helping oversee the younger teams for me and assisting with all technical aspects of the presentation. It was a true collaborative effort!
Here is the link to the story:
