Housekeeping and A Suitable Stand

A suitable stand is probably allowed, but the final say on that rests with
the people running your event, so check with them in advance, as they may have
unique space or safety concerns.

RULING 45 – HOUSEKEEPING 2

For those of you who want to store objects off the table:
The new Housekeeping rule does NOT rule out the use of TV trays/folding stands, carts. etc., which most tournaments have allowed for a decade.

Re-stated: You don’t HAVE to dedicate one of your drivers to holding a box of stuff all the time,
but that is an option. A suitable stand is probably allowed, but the final say on that rests with the people running your event, so check with them in advance, as they may have unique space or safety concerns.

Also: “Partially” in Base could mean barely or mostly. “IN” itself can mean totally, barely, or mostly. In fact, it really doesn’t matter if you store something on the mat OUTSIDE Base,
as long as the only strategy for doing that is STORAGE.

Please, everyone, the bottom line is that teams need room and the referees need to see everything. Housekeeping is one of our “softer” rules, written to help teams and referees both.

Brooklyn Teams: Change of Venue and an Opportunity

To all New York City FIRST Lego League Teams:

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the NYC FLL Planning Committee had to change the venue and date of the Brooklyn qualifying tournament. This tournament will now be held at the Brooklyn campus of Polytechnic Institute of NYU (formerly Polytechnic University) on Saturday, January 10. Details regarding the event schedule and registration will be provided soon.

We are also delighted to announce that this year we have almost doubled the number of FLL teams that have registered in Brooklyn. As of close of registration, there are 63 teams registered in Brooklyn (highest registration than any other borough this year). As a result of the large registration, we will need to ask some teams to attend a qualifier in another borough. We understand that this may result in scheduling issues with some you and we will work to make sure that we address any of your concerns if your team is impacted.

In order to be as fair as possible, we will first ask those Brooklyn teams that would like to attend an event in a different borough, to please let us know as soon as possible. Depending on the number of teams that voluntarily elect to go to a different borough, we will determine how many additional teams will be asked to go to a different event. These slots will then be filled with teams chosen in the order in which they registered with FLL, starting with the latest registration and going backwards toward the first.

If you are a Brooklyn team and would like to volunteer to attend an event in a different borough, please contact the NYC FLL Registration Coordinator, Norm Scott, at NorScot@aol.com. For reference, here are the dates of the other qualifying tournaments:

• Staten Island: December 13, 2008
• Bronx: December 20, 2008
• Queens: Dec 20, 2008
• Brooklyn: January 10, 2009
• Manhattan: January 11, 2009 (this qualifier is currently filled to capacity and cannot accommodate teams from Brooklyn)

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me at msharf@optonline.net

Sincerely,
Mark Sharfshteyn, Chairperson
NYC FLL Planning Committee

JFLL Q&A by Keith Wynne

Registration for JrFLL Expo at CCNY will be taking place in November through December and that more information will be posted by the end of this month!

1) Who is in charge of registering the team / school?

Anyone can register a team. All you have to do is go onto the website and click on the link to Jr.FLL. The 25.00 registration fee gets you access to the forum and team access pass.

2) If it is me, how will I pay for the registration?

Anyone can pay for it, but you should speak to your principal about using a credit card or ask your P.T.A. to reimburse you. As far as the base kit is concerned. You can purchase one from LEGO Education for $95.00 and can us a school purchase order to pay for it.

3) What is the structure as to how I choose six (it is six 1st graders who will make up the group) students?

The children can be ages 6-9. I recommend you keep them all in the same age or grade as this is easier to manage. You can do it during a lunch club, after-school, or if you principal clears it, during the extended day, if there is no money available to pay per-session. This is completely up to you to work out with your principal. Some schools charge tuition for after-school programming. That's how we work it at my school in Brooklyn. I don't know your school's current structure, so you have to figure that out for yourself...

4) Once chosen is there a permission slip I send home and wait to get returned?

Again...this is completely up to you to work out with your principal. Type a letter inviting children and get parents to return it to you. If interest is high, you may have to do a lottery. Try to figure out what the fairest and most equitable fashion is. You can even get the classroom teachers on board by pushing into their rooms. I did all three second grade classes last year with every child learning about the program and each class producing their own final product. I then invited 6 kids from each class (3 boys and 3 girls) to join me at the expo, but every child participated so there weren't any questions of equity or fairness.

5) Is there any training / template for me to use to get started on this? I have gotten the challenge and it makes sense, but it would help a lot if I had some sort of model to work from, or a even the chance to observe someone else doing this type of class.

You don't have any programming to worry about and the guidelines are available on the JrFLL link. You should check out the theme and rules first. The challenge is to build a model that represents the theme of Climate Connections and then incorporate a show-me poster that represents an understanding and interpretation of the theme. (this part is very similar to the criterion for the FIRST LEGO League research projects)

6) Not having done Robotics before I'm still not completely clear on what type of supplies are needed for the group? We have a site license for MicroWorlds Robotics, which can be used to program NXT bricks, but I've never worked with LEGO in this way. What kind of LEGO do we need to have in the school to proceed -- or do we already have these materials?

The only materials you need are LEGO Pieces, a base mat, access to a computer to do research, and you can purchase the base kit from LEGO Education if you like. It has a lot of extra moving and small pieces that you most likely won't use, but if you lack materials, it's a good place to start. I also recommend you purchase one or two boxes of standard LEGO Pieces and a base mat to build your model on. Total materials cost is less that $150.00 per team.

Let me know if you need anything else from me. We will be inviting teams to register for the JrFLL Expo at CCNY on January 11th later this month. Approximate entry cost is $40.00 per team.

Sincerely Yours,
Keith A. Wynne

US Ohio Open Championship

The message below is being sent to US teams as an announcement regarding the US Open.

We are so excited that this opportunity is being offered to you and are very appreciative to the host and huge FLL supporter, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. Our Operational Partners VOLUNTEER to bring the /FIRST /LEGO League program to you! The fact that Kathy Levine has volunteered to take on the daunting task of orchestrating the US Open, in addition to overseeing the daily operations of the Ohio region, truly boggles our minds. But Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is committed to offering an additional opportunity for FLL teams in the United States to showcase what they've learned throughout the Climate Connections season. Please join us in expressing our gratitude!

*Dear U.S. FLL Teams:
We are excited to announce that the first, ever, /FIRST /LEGO League United States Open Championship will be held at the Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio on May 7 - 9, 2009.

A newsletter for the NYCFIRST robotics community in New York City and the surrounding area.

ALL UPDATES POSTED AT
http://normsrobotics.blogspot.com/

The NYC/NJ FIRST web site is at http://nycnjfirst.org/

Click on the links in the sidebar if you want to read back issues of these updates. ( I won't reveal how they end.)

Welcome back to a new school year. I hope all is going well so far. Put a little robotics in your and your kids' lives.

Have any issues about ordering, registering, organizing, the meaning of life?
Will the FLL season be interrupted by a black hole swallowing the earth?
Don't hesitate to call or email. But do so before the Hadron cyclotron creates any black holes – don't worry, they planted Kudzu to swallow any black holes that might pop up.

Make sure to attend the NYCFIRST Kickoff this Saturday (details below) where the missions will be explained and you can ask questions. If there is one event you attend, this one is it – and you can bring kids. You DO NOT have to bring any LEGO's, robots or field set-up kits.

Training - Save the Dates

Free Training by Vision Education at Polytehnic U Oct. 11, 18, 25 (if necessary)

Climate Connections Released on Sept. 5 for FLL and JFLL

http://firstlegoleague.org/community/HomePage.aspx
Links are also on the sidebar of my blog.

Mission videos can be downloaded or viewed directly.

Registration
You can still register, go to http://register4fll.com/.

If you registered and your team number does not appear on my list that means you did not complete the process – I only get to see teams that go through checkout. So go back and finish and also update your team profile.

Even if you don't pay, complete the registration. Order what you need and put down you are paying by PO (write TBD when asked for a number) or by check. This will reserve things for you until you pay - you have until mid-October before your team is flushed from the system, but the earlier you do so the quicker you get your stuff.

Not sure if you are listed as paid? Let me know and I'll check.
Or look down the sidebar on my blog for your team number.
(This list is not totally updated).

Registration may close early - From FIRST
With just under 1,000 slots available, FLL Climate Connections is shaping up to be the biggest season yet! Team registration is set to close when all team slots are filled at 4:00 PM (EDT) on September 30, 2008, whichever comes first. Additionally, FLL Materials (Robot Set and Field Setup Kit) must be ordered by this deadline, but are also subject to product availability.

*Keep your Team Profile Updated!*
To ensure receipt of important FLL communications, please remember to review and update your team profile prior to October 15, 2008.
Go to http://www.register4fll.com. In the "/Team Login/" fields, enter your Team ID (team number) and password. When your profile is complete, be sure to click the "/Continue/" button at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions.

If you haven't registered already, we hope you hop online (http://register4fll.com) soon and join us for the 2008 Climate Connections season! Available slots are filling in quickly.

Request for coach at Packer (Brooklyn)

We are looking for a Robotics teacher to work with two high school mentors and me after school at Packer in Brooklyn Heights on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
This would be either for our FLL program or to work with beginner roboticists.
Do you know anyone who may be interested?
The pay is competitive and the after school program is also looking for a computer gaming (learning to program games) teacher and a stop-motion animation teacher.

Any leads are helpful.

Thanks,
Maureen Reilly

Contact me if interested and I'll put you in touch with Maureen.

Trevor Day School looking to donate extras
I have several RCX bricks and Lego robotics kits that we'd like to donate to any FLL participating public school needing equipment.

The New FLL/Jr. FLL Social Site

Greetings FLL and Jr.FLL Teams!

Welcome back from your summer vacation!

This is a very exciting time for FIRST LEGO® League (FLL) and Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL)!

The 10th Anniversary Year Kickoff for the FLL and Jr.FLL Season starts today, September 5, and we want to invite you to check out and join in on something that is very special about FLL/Jr.FLL this year … a preview of your new Social Site at www.firstlegoleague.org.

This site was built with you in mind. Our goal for you with this site was to create a fun and inviting, global, online community for anyone involved in or interested in FIRST LEGO League and Junior FIRST LEGO League.

So go ahead…and take a look at this season’s game on the Social Site – “Climate Connections.”

You will find everything you need to know about “Climate Connections” including this year’s Challenge where you can delve into questions about our current climate and explore conditions for the future through missions including: connecting research resources, minimizing climatic influences, polar experiments, sequestering greenhouse gases, studying wildlife, preparing for climatic conditions, gathering communities of people…and so much more.

Coming in the next few weeks, you will enter the new Social Site through a global landing page where you will be able to select your country. Once you are on your own country-specific site you can go in many areas and directions –from learning about FLL and Jr.FLL programs internationally to seeing season schedules and registering a Team for the challenge. You can even create a Team Site (your own actual mini FLL/Jr.FLL Team Web site) or join in on a Forum…it is all there for you.

And we want you, your parents, and your sponsors to know that the FLL/Jr.FLL site complies with all child protection standards (COPPA) for non-profits and does not permit any advertising or solicitation on the site. Child users (14 and under) must have a parental or guardian specific permission prior to becoming a member on the site.

Once on the site, Teams will be able to upload avatars, files, and photos all while communicating with others in their own Team, in their country or with other international Teams.

For the first week the new Social Site will be dedicated to the information you need for this year’s Challenge:

  • · The Challenge area – where everyone can go to understand the Challenge as it relates to a significant real-world issue, see an overview of the science behind the Challenge, access a project resource tab where you can find common terms, experts and Web resources all dedicated to this year’s Challenge and much more;
  • · Jr.FLL area – where schedules, Challenge overviews, and Pre-Registration for a Jr.FLL Team Access Pass are available as well as private areas that are only available to Team Access Pass Members;
  • · The Game area – where the game, its mission and the game field are explained in detail and where FLL Engineer, Scott Evans, will answer all Game Q&As;
  • · The Blog area – where FLL/Jr.FLL staff and guest bloggers will interact directly with the community;
  • · Meet the Experts area – where Challenge Consultants are spotlighted;
  • · Awards area – where all award criteria is outlined and where you will find a Judges’ Blog with official Q&As about judging, hosted by Skip Gridley, FLL Global Judge Advisor;

Future functions of the site will include:

  • · Join the Community – Join the site and be able to set up a profile and begin communicating with others in the FLL Community;
  • · Team Site area – where Coaches can start a Team site and FLL members can communicate with each other as well as global Teams;
  • · Forum area – where all users are encouraged to post a comment, share stories or add information to a current string;
  • · Events area – where the community can post and search for events around the globe;
  • · Past Challenges area – where you can look at how over 10,000 Teams have competed in years past;

· Additional areas on the resource-rich site include advice on: Community Story Submissions, Coaches, How to Start a Team, How to Apply for a Grant, How to Fundraise, How to Build a Season, as well as including an expanded Search function and an explanation of the Core Values of the program.

We invite you to come take a look at the new FLL/Jr.FLL Social Site and bookmark it at (www.firstlegoleague.org). We welcome your feedback and suggestions … please send those along using the contact us form or by emailing to fllteams@usfirst.org or jrfllteams.org.

In the meantime, here are a few Questions & Answers to help you get started as you explore the site now, and as new functionality is introduced in the coming weeks! (You will also find a complete set of Q&As on the site itself).

FLL/Jr.FLL Social Site Questions and Answers:

1. How can I join the FLL Social Site? When can I join? And is there a cost to become a member?

When this feature is activated, to join the FLL Social Site, simply go to www.firstlegoleague.org and click on the Join Now button from any page and enter your information online. While the site is open to the general public, the Team Site Area does require that your coach has an officially registered team and will use a FLL Team number to gain access. There is no cost to join. Simply go to the site and click on ‘Join Now.’

2. I am on an FLL team – can I join the site on my own or do I need my Team to join?

Coaches start the Team Site for FLL Teams. For Jr.FLL Teams Sites, a Team Access Pass purchased by an adult is required to start a site. (To gain an Access Pass simply click on the register a team a team link on the Jr.FLL Home page.). Additionally, child users (14 and under) must have a parental or guardian specific permission prior to becoming a member on the site.

3. What kinds of information can a Team, or an individual, post on the site? What will not be allowed on the site?

Teams can post photos, avatars, files, success stories, tips, advice, and ideas, add an RSS feed –just about any function you will find on most other Social Sites.

However the site will not allow advertising and parental permission is required before any photos that contain children’s faces or names can be posted on the site.

4. Does the FLL Social Site accept advertising?

No. The FLL/Jr.FLL Social Site does not accept advertising.

5. Will all future official FLL/ Jr.FLL information be posted on the Social Site? Or, on the FIRST site, or both?

All official FLL/Jr. FLL information will be posted on both the social site and the FIRST Site. In addition, important messages from FIRST will appear on Team Site pages as well.

6. How do I use the Forum?

The Forum area of the FLL Social Site is a place to collaborate and learn from the knowledge that our program participants have discovered over the years. Whether you are a rookie or a veteran, the forum is the community’s resource for sharing and learning.

7. Can a team or an individual blog on the site? And if so, are there any rules for the FLL/Jr.FLL Blog?

The site has a community blog where members of the FLL/Jr.FLL staff and guest bloggers will interact with the site members. At this time there are no individual blogs. We ask all posts, whether on our blog, or forums or Team Sites use gracious professionalism at all times. In addition, posts are moderated and the site does have a profanity filter. We hope the community will embrace FLL/Jr.FLL Core Values at all times.

8. When will I be able to see what’s happening for FLL in other countries? (France, Spain, Germany, South Africa, etc.)

Operational Partners that manage the FLL program in a specific country are working to translate all the content on the site. This will take time. Please be patient and remember Operational Partners are volunteers too!

9. Can I register for an FLL/Jr.FLL team or become a coach or a sponsor through the FLL/Jr.FLL Social Site?

Yes you can. From both the FLL and Jr.FLL program specific pages; there are links to register a team, how to start a team, and how to support a team. Site Members will also find more information in the forum section, which is also accessible from the program specific pages.

NOTE: Because many schools and organizations operate on a private network, email must first go through a firewall. If your school has a firewall in place to control communications, please contact the appropriate personnel at the school to ask that the FLL/Jr.FLL Team be allowed to access www.firstlegoleague.org and also to receive emails from usfirst.org. Alternatively, you may choose to use a personal email address to access the site.

Costs

Registration: $200
FSK: $65 – you MUST check this box. Schools/orgs with multiple teams do not need to order more than one FSK.
Shipping: varies

You can also order one robotic kit and accessories when you register.

I was asked this question:

I noticed the Lego robot kit you can order as part of FLL registration is $365, which is a lot more than the basic kits you can order on the lego website. Do know if the FLL kits are something special, or is it just a price that includes software plus extra $$$ for FIRST? Either way, $365 is way high--base kit on Lego ed site is only $260 and has the same electrical inventory.

I received this response:

The FLL Robot Set is made up of two major parts, the MINDSTORMS for Schools (http://www.legoeducation.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=1263&c=0&t=0&l=0) which is $260, and the Technology Resource Set, as well as extra parts commonly used in FLL that can be purchased separately. Regular price for the FLL Robot Set is more than $600, so the FLL price is a huge discount and nothing extra is included for FIRST. They are bundled together so that teams receive everything they need "out of the box" at the start of the season to build attachments and participate in FLL. Teams can certainly purchase these separate elements and participate in FLL, but they would spend more if they chose to duplicate all the parts of the set.

New Teacher FLL blog

Hi,

I am starting a new blog to document my LEGO Teaching this year. I will be focusing on the coaching of my FLL teams, teaching after school LEGO Robotics, and on integrating LEGO experiences into my classroom.

Here is the link:
http://legoteacher.blogspot.com/

I have two posts up so far and will post a few more this week - I will most likely go to 1 - 2 posts a week when school begins after Labor Day.

LEGO Education on FAMIS System in NYC

Dear Valued New York City FLL Customer,

Thank you for your interest in FIRST LEGO® League and your support as a customer. We hope that you
are greatly anticipating the upcoming FIRST LEGO League season.

Because of some challenges associated with the FLL registration process and the New York City FAMIS
system, the FLL products were removed from FAMIS. Unfortunately, this created additional challenges
for New York City FLL teams. In order to provide superior customer service and easier access, LEGO®
Education North America has added the FLL products back to the FAMIS system.

In order for the FLL registration and FAMIS ordering process to work properly, FLL teams must register
with US FIRST at www.register4fll.com prior to placing an order on FAMIS. The FLL Team number
must be included on the FAMIS order to ensure timely processing and shipping. Orders without the
proper registration or team numbers will be delayed.

We hope this does not cause you any inconvenience. If you have any questions or concerns, please call
toll free at 1-800-362-4308.

Sincerely,

Gale Hurt
Customer Service Manager

For NYC schools, contract is in flux

The team ordering info for FLL teams through NYC DOE that I sent you in June has now been removed from the FAMIS-E catalog.

Veryl Greene found out why:

"I talked to Bob Woods and this is what happened...

The DOE removed the payments for registration & field kits from FAMIS-E for the FLL, because they said the price went up & they don't want to pay it. However, the NXT kit can still be ordered through FAMIS-E. Schools will have to pay for registration & field kits through some other means."

As for the FTC (which they will also think is too expensive) schools have to come up with their own funds & pay directly to FIRST (FTC).

Here is what it was before:

Item #: 800055470
Description: FLL team registration 2008 - #990305 Cost: $216.00

Item #: 800055489
Description: FLL 2008 Field Set Up Kit - #991217 Cost: 72.00

Item #: 800055497 FLL Robot Set 2008 - #979792 Cost: 394.20 (includes software)
If the DOE changes this info AGAIN, folks should contact:

Job Opportunity
I'm moving out of NY (to Tacoma, WA) this summer. For the past year I have been teaching LEGO Robotics at an organization called Hofstra STEP. I am trying to help them find a replacement for me. They are a great organization with excellent resources, rooms, technology, and staff. The pay is at least $40 an hour - negotiable upwards for experienced instructors.

If you know anybody out this way (Queens/Long Island) who may be interested, please have them contact me at 347 217-3503 or via e-mail (ianchowmiller@gmail.com).

Thanks,
Ian
